DNA Mining

I think it's only a matter of time before everyone's DNA is stored. It's a natural extension of all the government programs and systems put in place.

To get a job in NYC goverment, you have to give a DNA sample. If you get arrested for a small infraction, figure on giving DNA.

For years they have been DNA mining kids in Europe.

It's going to become "Give up your DNA or face criminal charges"

The reasoning is pretty valid for 99% of the population. If you save your kid's DNA it can be used to help identify that child if necessary. Cops love that idea.

But we don't know who's going to have access to all this data. The Goverment has lost MY personal data (in my case VA information). I get a letter to watch my credit report.

My Bank lost my information, and I got another letter. Computer hard drives lost or hacked. I got another letter.

Most recently, I got a letter from my phone company to tell me to be careful, they lost some data or they aren't sure it wasn't released for the same causes.

I don't think I'm alone in this. I bet we all have had a lot of these letters.

So we don't know who's going to hack into this data in the next oh, say, 70 years. And we don't know how the political winds will blow 20 years down the road.

It's just a matter of time before our genetic profiles will be our only valid ID.

And we cannot do a thing about it.

I hope they have a corner for iatrogenic illness compared to the original
DNA.
My son is deaf from not enough oxygen as a newborn,a choice made by the doctors over blindness from too much oxygen. He is deaf but he does not have a genetic deafness even though we have a lot of deafness on both sides. He was the first sensori-neural deaf child on either side. His handicaps were not connected by the doctors to the other doctors until he was 8, 1 year past the 7 years to build cases.
I have not thought the police were the right people to hold this type of info. My kids were hand-printed by childfind about 15 years ago and I made sure I kept the hand prints in my files.
Controllers rise to the top and abuse as far as they can. It is all scarey to think about.

So, Fred...is this a good thing, or a bad one?

We had a situation here where two junior high kids were dating. When the mother of the girl finally met the boy, she put a stop to the relationship immediately. Seems the kids were half brother and sister.

With all the adoptions and half siblings, not to mention those who do not know the paternity of the child, I think DNA testing prior to marriage might be acceptable. Remember, in TN, a blood test was required prior to marriage not that long ago.

There was something on the news (CNN?) over the weekend about Childrens' DNA samples being taken at birth in many states, without the parents' permission or knowledge, and screening for certain genetic disorders. The info ends up in the medical record, but the parents still aren't necessarily informed. In one case, there was a little girl who had the gene for cystic fibrosis, and her parents were furious that it could affect her future approval for health insurance and even employment.

I'd be furious too. That's why I'm testing anonymous.

I don't think it's a good thing. Particularly in goverment jobs. If you were required to have a secret clearance, this information would not doubt make a difference. The agents come in and ask all kinds of questions to family and employers.

Plus, if someone didn't test and had children, this would test for you if one is positive.

The worst part of this is that we don't know who has this data and how well they are keeping it. That was my point regarding all the computer hacking.

Not to mention, we can't speculate to what the political environment will be down the road. One could make the case that certain genitic profiles would be "harmful" to the system for some reason. It's happened before, and it could happen again.

Well, people seem pretty happy to give up personal data and freedoms anymore. Cameras on the street corners, scans down to your private parts in airports... people say it makes us safe... not so sure about that. The patriot act implies that you are being patriotic to give up civil liberties. I always thought that's what we fought to have in the first place?

I like the idea of a central Medical database.

Naturally, it would have to be better secured than those Who've been hacked by the Chinese.......

We have no idea what's been hacked. We just think we do.

I found out about the three "hacks" from the nice letters.

What was odd, I hadn't had any contact with any VA for over 15 years now. I've moved 5 times since, once out of state.

But they managed to send me a letter directly marked with my current address.

I want to add, that I had an unlisted number. I didn't know the VA could trace me through tax records, which would have been the only way. So the people that lost my information once, regained new information. I have such a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Am I paranoid? Maybe. But I hold on to the fact that you are paranoid ONLY IF there really no one out to get you....

Fred - "firewalls" and other protections are getting more and more effective. Don't they sometimes TELL you if they've been hacked? How did VA know?

That said - I don't think ANYONE should feal "warm and fuzzy", intil their so infallible that they're never breached!

My mother in law was excommunicated when she married a protestent in 1950.When pope changed hhis mind about this a priest turned up at Moes front door the next day even though she had a different name and address. Theres even a hymn about this called Ye Watchers and ye holy ones.
