Notes by Marsha Miller Ph.D.

On Monday, November 27, 2000, the Laurel Lake Center and the Guthrie Center held a special Thanksgiving dinner to honor Huntington's Disease researchers. Attending were researchers from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, HD families, staff members, and members of the Guthrie family. Guests were welcomed by Jim Pollard, program director at Laurel Lake and event organizer, and Lisa Guthrie, director of the Guthrie Center. Following a short program, shown below in pictures, a delicious traditional Thanksgiving dinner was served. During dessert, Arlo Guthrie and his family performed a selection of songs including Alice's Restaurant, Ukulele Lady, Christmas songs, and St. James Infirmary.

Attending the dinner was a privilege and an honor and has shown me once again that there are no nicer or more dedicated people than those who are a part of the HD community. The researchers were delighted to be there and optimistic about future treatments for HD. People with Huntington's Disease participated fully in the event. Much hugging took place.

The Guthrie Center is the former home of Alice Brock of Alice's Restaurant fame. After Alice, the building had several owners. In 1990, Arlo Guthrie formed a foundation and bought the building. It was re-consecrated as a church for people of all faiths. ("Bring your own God.") It is also used as a center for community events.

Lisa Guthrie welcomes guests to the Guthrie Center.
